Russell Brand sex tape

Alan Carr has been voted the celeb people would most like to see turned into a gnome. Think the British comedy industry is tough?

One of the biggest comedians in Israel, 62-year-old Dudu Topaz, yesterday hanged himself with the cord of a kettle in his prison cell, where he was awaiting trail for allegedly hiring thugs to beat up the TV executives who had cancelled his show.

David Walliams celebrated his 38th birthday last night, with a party attended by Katie Price, Geri Halliwell and Matt Lucas, James Corden and Rod Stewart’s daughter Kimberley, among others. A fake rumour claiming that Eddie Murphy is dead resurfaced this week.

The story, which has been knocking around for more than a year, claims that the 48-year-old comic, was killed in an accident on the Los Angeles set of the film Left 4 Dead, based on a video game. Murphy is, in fact, very much alive. His career on the other hand…

Editorial: Sex, Lies and Body-Swapping – What Sci-Fi Does Best

Last week saw a bit of controversy in the Stargate world, surrounding a character description for the upcoming Stargate Universe episode “Sabotage.” (Read all about it here, including the producers’ response issued right here on GateWorld.)

We’ve seen outcries all over the Web, ranging from “That’s an insensitive way of talking about disabled persons,” to “They’re indulging the cliched male fantasy of lesbians having sex with men,” to “It’s a violation of Camille’s body to have Dr. Perry use it that way,” to “That’s rape, so the story is abhorrent and the episode shouldn’t be made.”

Setting aside the many misreadings and misrepresentations of what the casting call actually said, I’d like to offer my own response to these criticisms.  But first, a word must be said about what character breakdowns and casting sides are, what they’re for, and why it’s not fair for viewers to draw conclusions or pass judgment based on them.

At the end of the day, I want to suggest to you, these criticisms entirely miss the point of why science fiction depicts controversial, often disturbing things.

Breakdowns Are Not ‘Real’

By that I mean that they are not a part of the story being told.  Unlike a production photo or a clip from a trailer, a character’s description in casting documents may finally bear little similarity to the character as she is depicted on screen.  Script pages are also usually from early drafts, and can be rewritten.  Or tweaked on set by the actors and director.  Or filmed, then cut.  (Television is a long, creative process involving contributions from hundreds of people.) It’s an early look at what might be, followed by months of refining by everyone involved.  Only the dialogue that is written, interpreted, acted, edited, and aired is worth judging.

To the degree that a character breakdown does correspond to the final product, it is only a snapshot — a single brush stroke in a large fresco.

There is only one way to judge any episode of television:  Watch it. The Internet age has brought us a world of pre-production criticism, which is just ridiculous considering the sort of medium that television is.  It presumes that one can accurately see an artist’s finished product before it has begun, that one can peer at Michelangelo’s marble slab and comment on the anatomy of David.

Web-based Programs Encourage Safer Sex Behaviors among Men at Risk for HIV/AIDS

A single-session, online, multimedia intervention effectively reduced risky sexual behaviors among young men who have sex with men, a group at high risk for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Such low-cost programs may help reverse the steady rise in HIV diagnoses among this population. The study was published online ahead of print on June 5, 2009, in the journal, AIDS and Behavior.

Background

Based on the Information-Motivational-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model for reducing HIV risk,
Kelly M. Carpenter, Ph.D., of Talaria, Inc., and colleagues developed a multimedia, online intervention that aimed to:

  • Increase knowledge of risk factors
  • Provide skills training for safer sex behaviors
  • Increase motivation for behavior change.

The researchers recruited 112 men who have sex with men, ages 18–39. Participants were HIV negative or did not know their status and had engaged in unprotected sex within the preceding three months. All participants completed a 25-minute baseline assessment and then were randomly assigned to the experimental intervention or a control group program. Both the intervention and control program required 1.5–2 hours to complete, though participants had up to a week to finish. Participants were asked to return to the study Web site three months later to complete a 20-minute follow-up questionnaire.

The intervention presented a variety of interactive exercises, multimedia clips, quizzes, and other materials that provided information about safer sex practices and tested participants’ knowledge of HIV risk factors. Those in the control group completed an online stress reduction program that described the effects of stress on the body and health reasons for reducing stress, in addition to leading participants in relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing and guided imagery. The control program did not include any sexual risk reduction information.

Results of the Study

Participants in both groups reported fewer risky behaviors compared with their baseline assessments. Those who received the intervention reported fewer instances of unprotected sex with partners who were HIV+ or of unknown status.

However, the researchers noted that few minorities participated in the study, a group that may be at highest risk for HIV infection and most in need of preventive interventions. Also, since the entire study was conducted online, the effects of only partially completing the intervention or completing only the baseline assessment are unknown.

400 Million-Year-Old Male Sex Member ID'd

Scientists have confirmed the oldest penis-like structure in an ancient fish specimen.

The discovery of the 400 million-year-old reproductive organ is one of the earliest examples of internal fertilization in vertebrate animals. Understanding the anatomy of these ancient fish could reveal further details in the evolution of vertebrates -- including humans.

The research is published in today's advanced online ahead of print edition of Nature.

Earlier this year the team, led by Australian palaeontologist Dr John Long, predicted some ancient fish from the Devonian era, had an attachment to their pelvic bone, which were used by males to fertilize females.

Long, of Museum Victoria, said "when we announced we'd found some structures in the pelvic fin that suggested copulation, we hadn't found the business end of how they were doing it."

Now the team have identified a long clasper, made entirely of bone, on another fish specimen. Long said claspers were used by the ancient fish, an extinct class of armored fish called placoderms, to grip inside the female while they were mating.

Dangerous Teen Sex

Sadly, it appears the progress made in the 1990s and early 2000s in improving teen contraceptive use and reducing teen pregnancy and childbearing has stalled.

This reversal in contraceptive use is consistent with increases in the teen birth rate in 2006 and 2007 as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and may well portend further increases in teen pregnancies and births in 2008.teen phone sex

Between 1991 and 2003, teens’ condom use increased while their use of no contraceptive method declined, leading to a decreased risk of pregnancy and to declines in teen pregnancy and childbearing.

The new findings, published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, paint a very different picture since 2003.

Using data from young women in grades 9 – 12 who participated in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the authors estimated teens’ risk of becoming pregnant based on their sexual activity, the contraceptive method they used and the effectiveness of that method in preventing pregnancy.

The authors found no change in teen sexual activity between 2003 and 2007, but did find a small decline in contraceptive use.

“After major improvements in teen contraceptive use in the 1990s and early 2000s, which led to significant declines in teen pregnancy, it is disheartening to see a reversal of such a positive trend,” says Dr. Santelli.

“Teens are still having sex, but it appears many are not taking the necessary steps to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.”

Chimps Trade Meat for Sex -- And It Works

The time-honored tradition of the dinner date may be just one more example of evolution at work.

Wild male chimps that share meat with females double their chances of having sex with those females, a new study says. The findings support a long-held hypothesis that food sharing improves male chimpanzees' chances of mating.

Studies had long shown that male chimpanzees shared meat with females, which don't typically hunt. The reason for the meat sharing, however, was a mystery—though perhaps not too tough to guess.

Males observed in the West African nation of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) shared monkey meat with females that exhibited the pink swellings on their rear ends that indicate ovulation and sexual availability. (Related: "Butts, Faces Help Chimps Identify Friends.")

More surprising was that males shared meat with females that didn't have sexual swellings, perhaps in hopes of future success, the researchers say.

The sex "may not necessarily occur immediately—it could occur sometime in the future," said study co-author Cristina M. Gomes, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany.

Meat is generally a rare treat for chimps, whose diet consists mainly of fruits and vegetables.

Evolution at Work?

The findings could shed light on our own evolutionary origins, researchers said.

Unstable? S.C. man on probation for horse sex has sex with same horse again

He's a repeat sex offender - who should be registered with the Humane Society. A South Carolina man was busted for having sex with a horse, while on probation for having sex with the same horse.

Rodell Vereen, 50, was arrested Monday night in the throes of bestiality by the filly's shotgun-toting owner, who also has video surveillance of the perverse act. "When they arrested him before I thought that was the end of it," said Barbara Kenley, who caught Vereen in the middle of his romp in the hay with her 21-year-old horse, Sugar.

Vereen was charged with buggery and tresspassing, and was held on $10,000 bail. "Hopefully he won't get out," said Kenley, owner of the Lazy B Stables in Conway, S.C. "My goal is to get him away from me and my property."

Vereen was on probation for a buggery conviction stemming from a November 2007 assault on Sugar, a crime that prompted Kenley to wire her stables with surveillance cameras. Kenley said cameras filmed Vereen having sex with her horse on July 19, but when she showed footage to the cops they told her they couldn't identify the suspect. She suspected Vereen would not be able to stay away from her horse, so she was ready when he snuck into her barn Monday.

"I wanted to catch him firsthand," she said. "It was just a matter of time before I caught him."

‘Tricks of the Trade’

SAN FRANCISCO -- Here’s a shocker: The one-night stand may be being replaced by long-term monogamous relationships when it comes to sex at academic conferences. That was among the revelations Tuesday at a panel of the Modern Language Association devoted to conference sex.

Well, actually it was devoted to theorizing and analyzing conference sex, although it was probably the only session at the MLA this year in which a panelist appeared in a bathrobe.

The annual meeting of the MLA has long been known (and frequently satirized) for the sexual puns and imagery of paper titles -- even if many of the papers themselves are in fact more staid than their names would suggest.

As the MLA meeting concluded on Tuesday, however, one session sought to put sex at academic conferences center stage. Drawing on literature, theory and experience, panelists considered not only the role of sex at conferences, but talked about identity, love and (perhaps more timely to many MLA attendees) the dismal academic job market.

Many presenters at the MLA use categorization to make their points, and this session was no exception. Jennifer Drouin, an assistant professor of English and women's studies at Allegheny College, argued that there are eight forms of conference sex (although she noted that some may count additional forms for each of the eight when the partners cross disciplinary, institutional or tenure-track/non-tenure track, or superstar/average academic boundaries).

The categories:

  • “Conference quickies” for gay male scholars to meet gay men at local bars.
  • “Down low” sex by closeted academics taking advantage of being away from home and in a big city.
  • “Bi-curious” experimentation by “nerdy academics trying to be more hip” (at least at the MLA, where queer studies is hip). This “increases one’s subversiveness” without much risk, she said.
  • The “conference sex get out of jail free” card that attendees (figuratively) trade with academic partners, permitting each to be free at their respective meetings. This freedom tends to take place at large conferences like the MLA, which are “more conducive” to anonymous encounters, Drouin said.
  • “Ongoing flirtations over a series of conferences, possibly over several years” that turn into conference sex. Drouin said this is more common in sub-field conferences, where academics are more certain of seeing one another from year to year if their meetings are “must attend” conferences.
  • “Conference sex as social networking,” where academics are introduced to other academics at receptions and one thing leads to another.
  • “Career building sex,” which generally crosses lines of academic rank. While Drouin said that this form of sex “may be ethically questionable,” she quipped that this type of sex "can lead to increased publication possibilities” or simply a higher profile as the less famous partner tags along to receptions.
  • And last but not least -- and this was the surprise of the list: “monogamous sex among academic couples.” Drouin noted that the academic job market is so tight these days that many academics can’t live in the same cities with their partners.

  • While many colleges try to help dual career couples, this isn’t always possible, and is particularly difficult for gay and lesbian couples, since not every college will even take their couple status seriously enough to try to find jobs for partners.

So these long distance academic couples, gay and straight, tenured and adjuncts, must take the best academic positions they can, and unite at academic conferences. “The very fucked-upness of the profession leads to conference fucking,” Drouin said. The idea that many academic couples have so little time together that they need academic conferences to see one another suggests a broader comparison, she said. “Conference sex is a metaphor for life in the academy: One takes what one can get when one can get it.”
